Sentivate describes itself as a hybrid web built to be a viable and realistic replacement for the modern web. They believe it will be faster, safer and more scalable than any solely centralized or decentralized web. In being a hybrid of the two, they feel they have designed the most efficient combination of a centralized web system but enhanced by decentralized components.
This new hybrid web will help them to tackle the following issues: bandwidth crisis, outdated protocols, broken DNS, lack of accountability, lack of identity, reactive security, Domain rules, and web categorization.
Sentivate are looking to tackle the increasingly concerning issue of having limited bandwidth on the current world wide web with a rapidly expanding human population. They believe that the state of the bandwidth we have available today will not match the current growth of humanity and the demands that we will place on this system as we look to stay interconnected at a global scale.
The current components of HTTP and DNS are outdated and will continue to have scalability issues as more and more businesses move online and more of the world starts to get access to the internet. HTTP is the current vehicle for money and to have issues with bandwidth and scalability can be very costly to a business, in fact it was reported in 2012 that a one second delay could cost Amazon 1.6BB in sales.

I sat down with Thomas DeMarchi, Co-Founder and developer at Sentivate to discuss the project more.
When did you first hear about Crypto and what was it that drew you into this space?
Very early on I saw BTC on GitHub and that piqued my initial interest. From there I got involved in mining with friends and slowly after trading. Eventually I wrote a Binance and leverage trading bot. It was as high speed as possible within the context of API limits. One issue the bots ran into is that it couldn’t trade as fast as it wanted to because of an API or network rate limitations. This over time was adjusted to more of an opportunistic trading bot that took in more details. We’ll be releasing a trading bot or code for it on the Sentivate Network exclusively at some point. We had experimentations and prototypes of blockchain related tech for purely research and development purposes. The experiments were designed to prototype ideas quickly and see how they could play out on a larger network.
What is your background and what was the driving force behind starting (or joining) Sentivate?
I’ve been building websites, creating GUI designs, and mobile apps for local businesses since the eighth grade. In my senior year of high school, I started building an experimental social network (LNKit). I went to college for a short time at NJIT, but quickly realized that the courses were aimed at pumping out entry-level developers, and I already had working apps & paying clients.
I’ll keep the bit about myself short as I prefer the focus to be on the work. I’m a builder at heart, have a constant need to create, and I continually strive for perfection in my work. I have been developing longer than half my life span. I have built a plethora of apps in different subject matters such as: genetic applications, mobile apps, neuromorphic front/back-ends, utility libraries, websites, real-time apps, social media automation, social networks, benchmarking software, security, frameworks, high speed trading apps, CSS design frameworks, RFID solutions, media applications, torrent streaming, IT, modified browsers, and GUI designs.
2018 was a tough year for the Crypto market. However, from a tech perspective, we witnessed even more innovation and advancements than ever before. Can you talk about the progress Sentivate has made over the last year? Sentivate is a project of Arity – a software company founded in 2014. Was it always the intention to enter the blockchain space or did this occur organically?
Originally we were designing Sentivate to be a solution for private government intranets, or private Webs. After going through the many faults of the web and finding that many vulnerabilities were inherent, we slowly started to change direction. Eventually we realized the scope of what we were building and what was actually being created. As we continued to research solutions for things like built-in congestion control for packets, cryptocurrency started to move into the mix. Decentralized aspects were initially part of the original design as it improved availability of static assets and increased scalability in addition to the centralized services.
Hybrid Apps, or hApps, are an interesting concept that you say will have all the benefits of traditional web apps & dApps whilst being scalable and having modern real-time features. Can you talk about the advantages of developers creating hApps and how these will be used in your ecosystem?
Hybrid Apps are self-constructing streamed single-page-applications. Applications are designed in a highly modular fashion. Application’s assets are contained in their own file and are streamed to the client on an as needed basis. Only exactly when the client needs the resource is it fetched and delivered. Sentivate’s components allow for highly module asset streaming. For example, components can share the same CSS or HTML assets which ensures shared assets are only downloaded once and the duplicate code is never sent over the wire. Server loads and bandwidth is drastically decreased with this methodology as now the client is only pulling exactly what is needed. Hybrid Apps can utilize an opt-in decentralized P2P CDN for assets in addition to other centralized CDN services. Making use of a Hybrid Content Delivery Network means that hybrid apps have high availability, scalability, and more bandwidth for real-time dynamic content.
All the benefits of centralized systems & decentralized networks provide hApps with the highest scalability potential. hApps are built using reactive, dynamic, and modular development methodologies. They are streamed and built over time much like a bridge building itself as you walk across – only one initial page load takes place and thereafter pages are dynamically built as needed similar to Single-page-apps.
hApps offer a new frontier of web app development that developers will want to explore. Companies and exchanges that have high costs associated with bandwidth, speed, and resources have a tremendous amount of capital to save, application performance to gain, and more customers to serve by using the Sentivate network. ISPs & NSPs looking to alleviate congestion due to IoT devices will have a tremendous monetary incentive to make the switch.
You have pioneered a certificate system with your Identity Certificates and Registrar products that would mean users would no longer have to remember passwords. Can you discuss the idea of the Universal Identity System and why you believe this technology is essential moving forward?
There are two core components of the Identity System. The first is the Identity Registrar which signs certificates & is the first layer of protection for the network. The Identity Registrar validates and keeps a record of active certificates on the network. The Identity Registrar is a service which signs certificates & is the first layer of protection for the network. The IR protects the network by filtering faulty certificates,Sybil Attacks, and nefarious actors. The Identity Registrar ensures malicious certificates aren’t signed which allows services to efficiently deny their connection attempts. False signatures can be denied by the DIS and therefore potentially protect a service and save some of its resources. A decentralized network and dynamic blockchain will be leveraged to help validate newly submitted certificates for signing. If the certificated is successfully vetted by the network the IR signs the certificate and then it can be successfully used by services and the DIS. During the initial handshake, the first packet contains the certificates required to establish a UDSP bi-directional stream. If signatures are successfully validated the rest of the handshake process continues.
The other component is Identity Certificates which is like a passport and a form of identification on the Internet. Your Identity Certificate allows you to instantly signup, login, and or purchase an item. It also removes the need to create a username or password. Using keypairs instead of a traditional username and password relies on cryptography for enhanced privacy and security. Sentivate keypairs act as your identity for the internet.
Identity Certificates are documents which act as a way to cryptographic-ally authenticate yourself on the network. The certificates are signed by a central or acting authority known as the identity Registrar. There are multiple Ephemeral Identity Certificates which are attached and signed by a Master Identity Certificate and the Identity Registrar. The Identity Registrar acts as a protected faucet guarding the network against various Sybil attacks. The Identity Registrar ensures malicious master and or ephemeral certificates aren’t signed which allows services to efficiently deny their connection attempts. Certificates allow the community to establish a decentralized reputation blockchain, which can publicly record good & bad behavior associated with specific certificates. A honeypot can be used to block known bad actors from accessing a service.
The Master Certificate is used to sign various ephemeral certificates and may be used for Identity verification and wallet action authentication. The master key pair is the initial source of authentication for the keypairs. Ephemeral key pairs must be signed by the Master certificate first before they can be submitted to the Identity Registrar for signing.
Ephemeral Certificates, (EC), are a sub certificate to the Master Certificate. ECs act as profiles which are used to access user defined services. For example, wallet certificate, banking certificate, general web browsing certificate or for every service. ECs are also used for the key exchange process which sets up a bi-directional UDSP connection between the origin and host. Since encryption is handled by ephemeral certificates users can easily create a new EC to ensure security is always adapting. However, their root identity being the master certificate is still present and used to validate the EC.
What are the benefits of Identity Certificates?
Users can visit a page, instantly create an account, and then instantly make a purchase. Sites can offer instant login & signup. Certificates remove the need to remember a password as the ephemeral certificates act as access keys. Ephemeral Certificates are created from the browser, which enables users to assign specific certificates to certain services. This is an effective way to mitigate potential damages in the case of theft or a device is lost. Devices can now be limited to certain ephemeral certificates so you can take social media on the go but leave your banking credentials on your home desktop.
Can you provide some detail as to the progress of the token swap from SNTVT to VIAT and what holders can expect with this change?
Viat is our mainnet cryptocurrency that is a component of the Sentivate network. SNTVT will be swapped for Viat upon Viat’s launch. SNTVT ERC20 will be burned and everyone will be required to swap to Viat. Viat will have its own chain.
Viat runs on the Sentivate Network. Viat is not Sentivate or vice versa. The Viat site will only be accessible over the Sentivate network with a browser that supports the Universal Web.
We strive for a delicate balance between the both when it comes to control of the network. So things like the DIS are decentralized in it’s distribution and validation but centralized in the signing, selling, and authorizing of domains similar to ICANN.
Viat has its own unique balance where the centralized bits aid the decentralized network.
Sentivate uses decentralized components to aid the centralized ones.
What else can we expect from Sentivate in 2019? Are there many surprises around the corner?
Our Roadmap stays up to do within 3 months of the release schedule. We may have some surprises down the line when it comes to strategic partnerships and we are always open to opportunity.
Can you summarize your ultimate vision for Sentivate?
The ultimate end goal is for the world wide web to be phased out along with its outdated technologies. The Universal Web becomes the standard for the web. The UW spreads beyond this rock called Earth and everyone is using Viat to buy and sell goods and donate to services. The revenue model for services slightly adjusts. Buying goods become a click of a button. DDOS attacks and web crime are drastically on the decline. The need for usernames and passwords have been almost completely phased out. Identity certificates act as your keys to not just the Universal Web but the political voting process.
When individuals are born or if they become citizens generate an identity certificate which are signed by the governing body of the land. Your identity certificate becomes your global id for all countries and soon planets. The economy is moving at higher speeds as trades and purchases happen at near real time. Identity theft and security related concerns are less successful and concerning. Bad actors are held accountable and the web becomes a safer place. Malformed packets never make it out the gate.
A majority of data transfers are using UDSP for things over than the Universal Web. UDSP becomes a universal protocol that fits into many different use cases beyond the UW. The web takes on a new language that is capable of being compiled and or highly optimized. All web apps are beautiful by default and seamless across devices. Apps now all can take advantage of rolling design and technological updates for the web instead of waiting for years for a bureaucratic process to produce lackluster results.
The web of the future will drastically change how our economy, social interactions, web legal system, and political process occur. The Identity system at its heart is decentralized identity on a global scale. Identity certificates become individuals digital identity even physical devices. I believe that what we will set the groundwork for will forever change the face of Web communications for years to come. Something that will culminate to a singularity that we truly can’t see past just yet.
